Street Dreams – 22nd May- SoundControl, Manchester

If you’re the type that likes to read a few good words about an event for you to visit it, then please, let me enlighten and invite you to Manchester’s Urban Music Showcase that is Street Dreams. Introducing its third event, this time at SoundControl on May 22nd with appearances from Benny Banks, Yungen and my personal Manchester favourite; Kapital. Street Dreams will entertain and inspire you just as its name describes.

Having felt the inspiration from the first Street Dreams event in October 2012, it was a given that I would be attending the second, (which again was a success in March 2013) and undoubtedly all future events.

The creators; Becky Brown of R82 Records and Icon X Entertainment host an incredible event with an atmosphere that is inspiring, enjoyable and full of fresh musical talent. A perfect combination!

Having previously showcased Blizzard, Shotty Horroh, Kapital, One Da, Envy and Crown. This year’s showcase welcomes UK Rap HeavyWeights Benny Banks, Play Dirty Artist Yungen and Iconx & R82Records member Kapital.

Joining this stellar line up are the Batz Inda Belfry girls; whom by the way are killing their shit at the moment (excuse my English; cos its not really French is it!) and Don’t Flop battle superstar Raptor.

Again the whole night will be hosted by DJ Stylus (1Xtra/Jam).

You are guaranteed a fantastic night of live music which will no doubt leave you with great memories and inspiration to keep striving for your dreams.

Personally been waiting for the annoucement of this event since the end of the second one.

Come join the vibes and be a part of the movement. Get your ADVANCE £10 ticket here. Only 100 available and these will sell out!

“From the streets to the stage I just want you to walk with me”- Kapital, Walk With Me, 2011, BBC Mixtape of the Week.

Bipolar Sunshine Ritz Review – Friday 17th April

Bipolar Sunshine.

They are becoming a band where you just have to mention their name and the applaud beings to start.

From attending their first EP launch of Aesthetics’ in Soup Kitchen Manchester of June 2013, to attending their final tour date at The Ritz, Manchester on Friday 17th April;  It is clear to see how far they have come in a short space of time.

To see Adio smile, in awe, with his bandmates Jazzpurple, Woody Karma and Adam Prendergast was a beautiful moment to witness and be a part of their musical journey.

Applauds and echoes of their song lyrics filled the room throughout the whole set. Performing hit after hit including Drowning Butterfiles, Fire, Deckchairs On The Moon, Where Did The Love Go, Mad World Cover and Daydreamer, they had the audience in the palm of their hands but in such a humble and pure way.

Beautifully finished off with the vibe and message: Love More and Worry Less. They left the place buzzing and with a memory of brilliant live music.

Thankyou for the vibes. Until next time!

Girl Shaped Love Drug – Homecoming Screening

Girl Shaped Love Drug – Three Coincidences, Two Souls, One Day.

Ever since Saturday 6th October 2012 I’ve been itching to see this stunning film again and again. Girl Shaped Love Drug’s World Premier was screened as part of Manchester’s first Great Manchester Film Festival which went down an absolute storm and is easily one of my favourite memories.

Girl Shaped Love Drug has gone from strength to strength receiving awards and consistent positive recognition and feedback from audiences all over the world.

Only known to the audience as ‘him’ and ‘her’ the story of three coincidences surrounding two souls in just one day strikes deep within your minds through the excellent acting and production. From the very first second to the very last pixel, I was hooked. Laughing, smiling, reminiscing along the way as I watched a story of serendipity unfold before me.

Set in Manchester and shot in black and white this modern-day love story uses minimum cast and minimal locations yet the impact is has and the feel it gives you as a viewer is second to none.

The beautifully written script allows you to engage in the dialogue and warm to the actors when their moments of emotion are shown sometimes with only music heard.

Every frame is a photographers dream and every single detail expressed through the actors, dialogue, locations and music all come together and have created a beautiful piece of art which deserves all the praise and recognition it gets.

Simply an amazing, gripping, witty, warm, stunning, inspirational piece of film. It left me feeling full of happiness and positivity and without a doubt will always be a film I’ll never get tired of watching and equally a favourite of mine.

A massive well done, congratulations and thank you to everyone involved.

I personally want to express a huge thankyou to Simon Powell for showcasing his vision to us all and in doing so has created a beautiful piece of art that will forever stay with, and inspire me. But also for founding the whole Greater Manchester Film Festival. It’s exactly what Manchester needed so thank you and bring on another GMFF!

The genesis for this film was down to two experiences. 1) A woman that I love deeply and 2) Deano Small (real life person I met in Bristol). I really wanted to write and direct something that removed me from my previous film. I simply wanted to create an offbeat love story set in old Manchester, in black and white, with a tiny cast and minimum locations. The script was written over a 5 day period in the Autumn of 2011 and with a love story being the oldest story in the book and the most natural, organic feeling us humans experience, I decided to shoot against the back drop of old Manchester to support the organic nature of the tone and performances from the cast. We allowed scenes to play out like theatre in much of the film to create a natural feel and to give the actors the opportunity to breathe, be spontaneous and grow within a scene. I’m delighted with what we achieved.” – Simon Powell, Director.

Labrinth in Kris Van Assche at Radio 1 Big Weekend 2013

Once again Labrinth’s stylist, Ayishat Akanbi has smashed it on the fashion front. Styling the musical genius in a piece from Kris Van Assche’s Fall 13 Collection has made me Fall, in love.

Kris Van Assche Fall 13

This particular piece from the collection combines a hoodie with a tuxedo  mixing the element of casual with smart, making a perfect combination; especially for an energetic musical performance allowing movement and comfort but still possessing style!

“You are what you wear. Simple as that. Menswear is so full of rules and codes. This is about not getting put in a box.” – Kris Van Assche on his Fall 13 Collection.

Beautiful collection, perfectly styled and an excellent performance once again from Labrinth!

Kapital KO gives us his heart and soul in his latest release, Story So Far, from what originated as a personal freestyle has now evolved into a national release, showcasing his honest lyrics and amazing metaphoric lyrical ability!

Recently signed to Manchester’s Newest Urban Label and Publishing Company, R82Records; which sees the digital release of Story So Far on April 22nd. This deserving smash hit has already been played on BBC 1Xtra whom (rightly so) awarded Kapital KO’s last mixtape I Am Legend as their Mixtape Of The Week, blogged by Mobo Awards and RWD Magazine and is currently playlisted on MTV Base, Kiss and Flava.

The video shot by Matt Walker of Staplehouse, gives us amazing visual projections of Kapital KO’s honest lyrics while the #fistintheair shots get cooler throughout!

The projection of images in the background emphasising the detail of the Story So Far lyrics and the reflection of the #fistintheair shot at 3.25 (my personal fave), link extremely well with the songs origin of being a personal freestyle expressing emotions reflecting upon tough past events, and how far the track has come in forms of progression into a radio edit, official video and national release on iTunes really proves that ‘in every negative, there’s a positive’.

Download Story So Far from iTunes on April 22nd 2013!
